Wilma Birdsong

Wilma M. Birdsong, 87, of Battle Creek passed away Tuesday May 1, 2012 at Bronson Battle Creek. She was born on January 31, 1925 in Battle Creek to Hayes and Gladys (Lanko) Lewis.
Wilma graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1943. She was employed as a secretary retiring in 1986 with the last 29 years with the Hamilton Deo Insurance Agency.
Wilma married Keith E. Gillenwater in October of 1945, he preceded her in death in 1976. She then married Ellis L. Birdsong in September of 1984, he preceded her in death in 1993.
Wilma is survived by her sister, Carol A. Lewis, and her step-children, Carolyn (Roger) Sawdey, Susan (Richard) Arlington, and David (Christine) Birdsong.  She was also preceded in death by brothers, William, Wesley, Richard, and Dale Lewis.
Wilma was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church and many of its organizations. She was a past member of American Business Women’s Association Mitten Chapter and Innovation Chapter. She received the Women of the Year Award from Innovation Chapter. Wilma was a member of Christian Singles Fellowship group. She enjoyed reading crocheting, and was very active in volunteer work and could rarely say no to any need. Wilma was a caring, strong, independent, Christian woman who was very active in her church and other organizations.
In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 11am Saturday May 5, 2012 at Lakeview Baptist Church with Rev. Adam Metzger officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to Lakeview Baptist Church, American Cancer Society, or charity of one’s choice.
