William J. Caldwell, age 85, of Battle Creek, passed away on June 1, 2019 at the Glenn Arbor Hospice Residence. He was born on December 4, 1933 in Battle Creek, the son of William and Evelyn (McClure) Caldwell. William was a graduate of Lakeview High School in 1951. He served in the Air Force from 1952 until 1956. He then attended Western Michigan University where he received his Master’s Degree in business administration. William was united in marriage to his wife, Audrey Wine, on March 15, 1952. He had worked for Harper Creek Schools until 1971, Fenton Schools from 1971-1973, owned and operated the Pinecrest Motel in Jonesville from 1973-1975, Manistee Public Schools from 1975-1979, Jackson Public Schools from 1979-1982, and then moved with his wife to Texas to manage LaQuinta Hotel from 1982-1984. After that point, he then returned to Battle Creek to retire. William was a member of the St. Phillip Catholic Church, past board member of Oak Hill Cemetery, Historical Society of Battle Creek, and Friends of Willard Library. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Audrey Caldwell, in 2011; his parents; and a granddaughter, Brandi Thompson. Surviving are children, Jane Caldwell, Dave Caldwell, and Elaine Caldwell all of Battle Creek, Joanne (Ryan) Hansen of Manistee, MI, William Caldwell of Sheffield, AL, and Karen (Mark) Moore of Winter Haven, FL; grandchildren, Christopher Hansen and Heather (Cameron) Hansen of Manistee, MI, Shawn Hansen of Kansas City, MO, and Katrina (Cecil) White of Virginia; great grandchildren, Caitlyn and Jordan White. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 6 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home & Cremation Services. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, June 7 at St. Phillip Catholic Church. Interment with military honors will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of SW Michigan or the charity of one’s choice. Condolences may be left for the family at www.henryfuneralhome.org
