Virginia R. Smith, age 92, of Battle Creek, died Saturday, March 30, 2013 at her home. Virginia was born on October 29, 1920, in Bad Axe, Michigan, the daughter of James and Florence (Brooks) Spencer. On March 1, 1941, she was united in marriage to Howard Smith who preceded her in death on November 21, 1992. Virginia worked in the Battle Creek Township Treasurers office for fifteen years and following the merger was employed by the City of Battle Creek Treasurers office for seven years retiring in 1991. She was a member of the First Congregational Church for over 50 years and played in the Bell Choir. She loved to camp, play bingo, go to the casinos and especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. Surviving are children: Randy S. Smith and Charlene K. (Antoinne) Evans both of Battle Creek; grandchildren: Scott McDonald, Cherilynn (Mike) Glass, Candy (B.J.) Smith and Tonya Thompson; nine great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and one brother, Ralph (Shirley) Spencer of Seattle, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, James Spencer. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Ryberg officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to Lifespan Hospice.
