Virgil E. Mains, age 93, of Kalamazoo, formerly of Battle Creek, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2018 at Kairos Dwelling. He was born May 18, 1925 in Battle Creek, Michigan the son of DeWitt and Pansy (Winslow) Mains, the oldest of eight children. Virgil attended Battle Creek Central High School and worked for United Steel and Wire for 43 ½ years, retiring in 1987. On September 6, 1947 he married Violet Horvat. Virgil enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling in their trailer. For many years they vacationed at their cabin in Watersmeet, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. In 1993 they moved to the cabin but wintered in Brooksville, Florida. Virgil attended Gull Lake United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife of 70 years, Virgil is survived by a son: Phillip E. (Sue) Mains of Augusta; a daughter: Paula (James) Fornell of Washington, NC; four grandchildren: Douglas E. Mains, Andrew (Savannah) Mains, Amber (Adam) Burkett and Autum (Brad) Hearon; two step granddaughters; five great-granddaughters: Addison and Ashlyn Burkett, Adeline, Charlotte and Vivian Mains; two great-grandsons: Emmitt Mains and Braden Hearon; four brothers: James, Stanley, Rollin and David Mains; sister: Virginia Duflo; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Kenneth and Richard Mains. The family will receive friends at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at the Funeral Home with interment to follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.
