Sister Mary Cyrilla Jegla, RSM entered eternal life on April 7, 2021. Surviving are siblings, Barbara Thelen, Charles Jegla, Thomas Jegla and David Jegla; many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and her Sisters in Community
Born in Lansing, MI and a native of Westphalia Sister Mary Cyrilla entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 7, 1950, in Detroit. She received degrees from Mercy College of Detroit and Notre Dame University. A former teacher and junior high and elementary school principal she ministered at various schools throughout Michigan in Manistee, Cheboygan, Hemlock, Berkley and Detroit. She served in special projects at the Sisters of Mercy’s headquarters in Bethesda, MD and was administrator at White Gates on St. Mary’s Lake Battle Creek when the Sisters of Mercy owned it.
After a sabbatical Sister began as pastoral minister at St. Joseph Parish in Battle Creek in 1982 working with seniors and those shut in by illness taking communion to them, and planning programs at area nursing homes. She also served with the Legion of Mary in parish outreach projects and assisted the St. Vincent de Paul Society in its work with the those experiencing poverty. A minister of the Eucharist and reader at liturgical services, Sister sang in the church choir and made and maintained sanctuary banners and decorations.
Celebrating her 70 th Jubilee at St. Joseph’s in the Fall of 2020 Sister Mary Cyrilla remarked: “God has blessed me with the privilege of becoming a Sister of Mercy. My life has been filled with challenges that encouraged me to use my many gifts in serving the people of God.”
