Shirley Ryan

Shirley A. Ryan, age 83, of Battle Creek, peacefully passed away on December 3, 2022 at home.  She was born on June 1, 1939, in Battle Creek, the daughter of Robert G. and Mary R. (Lockwood) Micklatcher.  Shirley was a lifelong resident of Battle Creek.  She graduated in 1957 from St. Philip High School, then went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts in 1961, and later, a master’s degree from Western Michigan University.  She previously worked at Valley View Elementary School,  worked part time at the Dyslexia Center, and would substitute teach.  She was a member of St. Philip Catholic Church and St. Philip ladies’ circle.  Shirley also was a Cub Scout den mother and Girl Scout Leader.  She was a lifelong learner and an avid reader who enjoyed sewing, traveling, shopping, and spending time with family.  Shirley was married to the love of her life, Daniel F. Ryan, on August 5, 1961; he proceeded her in death on February 15, 1998.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Robert G. Micklatcher in 2018.  Surviving are her children; Laurie Ryan of Grand Rapids, Dan (Lisa) Ryan of Battle Creek, and Jenny Ryan, of Battle Creek ,grandchildren; John Ryan, Edward Ryan, Julia Ryan, and Eric Ryan, along with many dear friends and extended family.  The family will receive friends and extended family from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., on Thursday, December 8, 2022 at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home & Cremation Services, where the recitation of The Rosary will follow at 7:30 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., on  Friday, December 9, 2022 at St. Philip Roman Catholic Church.  Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to Companion Cats, Battle Creek or Michele’s Rescue in Grand Rapids.  Memories and condolences may be left for the family at www.henryfuneralhome.org
