Sarah Eckstein

Sarah Kathryn “Kay” Eckstein, Age 89, Of Battle Creek, Passed away Saturday, October 13, 2012. She was born March 31, 1923, near Olney, Illinois, the daughter of Freeman and Elizabeth (Dodd) Crane. She was raised near Bridgeport, IL, graduating from Bridgeport High School in 1940. She was married to Harold Eckstein in 1949 and traveled with her family to many Air Force Bases when her husband was in the Air Force. She retired from Federal Government Service from the Federal Center in 1987 with twenty nine and a half years of service. Her husband Harold preceded her in death on August 10, 1979. After retirement, she volunteered at many local places, Fort Custer National Cemetery, The Kellogg Biological Station on Gull Lake and at the Food Pantry. She was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Her family was very important to her and she loved to spend time with them. She enjoyed life, the outdoors, animals, reading westerns and historical information. Surviving are children, Susan (Edward) Cataldo of South Bend, IN, Kathy Eckstein of Augusta, MI, and Richard (Amy Powell) Eckstein of Augusta, MI; grandchildren, Darryl, Nick (Mia), Rachel, Jack, Julie, Carrie Eckstein, Paul and Joseph Cataldo; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Monsignor  Leonel Cartagena officiating. Interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Lakeview Food Pantry, 7 South 20th Street, Battle Creek, MI 49015.  Arrangements by the Richard A.
