Ruth E. Walkinshaw-Bowen, 108, of Marshall formerly of Battle Creek passed away Saturday January 25, 2014 at Verona Adult Foster Care Center. She was born on August 3, 1905 in Battle Creek to Luther J. and Flora C. (Andrew) Ranger.
Ruth graduated in 1923 from Battle Creek Central High School and in 1925 from Western Michigan Teacher’s College with a Life Certificate for teaching. She later took graduate courses from U of M and MSU. Ruth taught school in Alma for a short time. She then taught for 25 years with the Battle Creek Public Schools, retiring in 1971.
Ruth married Francis Walkinshaw in 1926, he died in 1966. She then married Rev. Milford Bowen in 1980, he died in 1988.
She is survived by a son-in-law, Leonard Hart, of Ceresco, four grandchildren, Patrick Walkinshaw, Christina Foster, Teresa Wilder, and Thomas Hart, ten great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, two step-children, David Bowen and Lauren Bowen, many step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren. Ruth was also preceded in death by a daughter F. Joan Hart, a son, Jack D. Walkinshaw, and two sisters
Ruth was a member of Convis Union United Methodist Church from the age of 14. She was a member of the Women’s’ Society and had been the pianist at the church for 22 years. Ruth was a member of the Battle Creek Retired Teachers Association and the MEA. She enjoyed traveling and crocheting.
Services will be held 12 noon Wednesday January 29, 2014 at Convis Union United Methodist Church with Pastor Sueann K. Hagan officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday 11am to 12 noon at the church. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue, MI. Memorial contributions may be given to Convis Union United Methodist Church of Oaklawn Hospice.
