Ruth Porter

Ruth Evelyn (Holt) Porter, Age 94, of Battle Creek, Went to be with the Lord on March 25, 2016, in Battle Creek. Ruth was born on a farm in Pierce County, Wisconsin on January 25, 1922 to Melven W. and Etta M.(Hamilton) Holt. She graduated from Pontiac High School, Pontiac, MI, in May, 1940 and married Carl E. Porter on September 28, 1940. Ruth worked at various secretarial and bookkeeping jobs until moving to Battle Creek in 1952 with Carl and their children. She also worked in the Control Department and testing lab at the Kellogg Company from March 1969 until February 1985. Ruth was a member of Central Christian Church. She taught Sunday school and served terms as President of the Fahola Class and of the Grace Circle. She worked with the Mission Committee and the building committee and assisted with many funeral dinners. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross blood drives, the Battle Creek Health System at the patient entrance, the food pantry on 20th  St., Post School P.T.A. and in the Kellogg store. Ruth was also a Bluebird and Campfire Leader. Her first joys were her family and making things for them. She would knit, crochet and sew with swiftness and beauty. Ruth made many quilts by hand and enjoyed her flowers. Ruth is survived by her children, Melvin (Sandie) Porter, Etta Dahlquist, Rex (Sue) Porter and Terri (Tom) Streelman. Her joys included her grandchildren, Melanie (John) Durham, Kristie (Darrick) Lakes, Valisha (Matt) Zimmer, Sabrina (Andy) Bouma, Jamie (Lee) Sander, Stephanie (Matt) Thornton, Nathan (Becky) Streelman, Bryan (Cheryl) Porter and Kimberly Goeman; Jeff (Ali) Dalhquist, Angela (Les) Britt and 27 precious great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Carl and her sister, Helen Edwards. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8:00 p.m., at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 31, 2016, at Central Christian Church. Interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
