Ruth Mortensen

Ruth L. Mortensen, age 91, of Battle Creek, passed away on August 16, 2018. She was born on September 28, 1926 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Karl and Hedvig (Svedin) Kroon. Ruth was a lifelong area resident. She graduated from Kellogg Agricultural School in 1943. Ruth was employed by the Kellogg Company for thirty-four years retiring in 1984, where she worked with savings and Investment plans and with the executive payroll. She was united in marriage on April 11, 1946 to Dale E. Mortensen, he preceded her in death in October 2005.  Ruth enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and Bingo. She loved her apartment and the nice folks at Lakeview Assisted Living. When she still lived in her home on Cotton Lake, she loved to watch the wildlife in her back yard. The blue birds and wood ducks were especially fun for her to watch. Ruth was treasurer for the VFW Auxiliary 5319 in Athens for 25 years, she also belonged to the Battle Creek ABWA. She is survived by her sister; Margie Vogt of Battle Creek, Ellen Alshouse (deceased) of Florida, grandson; Lonnie (Melissa) Mortensen of Ohio, great granddaughter; Rachel, daughter-in law; Pamela Mortensen of Battle Creek, step grandchildren; Justin Blakeslee of Arkansas, Ashlee (Jeremy) Blakeslee Peake, Keirsha (George) Eastman, both of Georgia. Great grandchildren; Seth, Bella, Rachel, Maggie, several nieces and nephews, JoEllen (Ralph) Reed of Georgia was a favorite. Ruth was also preceded in death by her son, Larry Mortensen on October 23, 2015 and her co-worker and friend of many years, Pat Homan. She will be remembered for her quiet strength and years of volunteering to those associations that she was most fond of. Anyone who knew Ruth, knew what a caring and kind lady she was, and will be missed by many. In accordance to her wishes cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held 2:30 p.m. on Friday, September 14, 2018 at Fort Custer National Cemetery, where interment will take place by her husband and son. Following services, the family invites you to join them for refreshments at Lakeview Assisted Living, 14661 Helmer Rd., South, Battle Creek. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Great Lakes Hospice Care of Portage. Condolences may be left for the family at www.henryfuneralhome.org
