Robert Schreiner

1932 — January 1, 2022

Battle Creek

Robert D. (Bob) Schreiner, age 89, of Bedford Township, passed peacefully on the morning of June 1, 2022. He was born on September 29, 1932, in Hastings, MI, the son of John L. and Kathryn A. (Wills) Schreiner. Bob was a lifelong resident of the area, having grown up on his parent’s farm in Lacey, MI, before marriage to his wife, Mary Y. (Szabo) in 1956 and eventually moving to Battle Creek in 1967. It was the rural atmosphere of the farm that nurtured Bob’s love of the outdoors. He spent many seasons hunting deer at Lake Gogebic and fishing at Cedarville in the upper peninsula. There were also many winters spent ice fishing on Houghton Lake and he always had a boat and a line in the water in many of the myriad lakes in the area. He spent his retirement years fly fishing for pan fish in those same lakes. He included his family in that love for the outdoors by taking them on numerous camping vacations throughout the Midwest. In later years he crossed the country in his motorhome, visiting the four corners of the U.S., including his favorite trip, driving to Alaska and back. He also had a love for baseball, playing the game into his 30s and then coaching his sons in the Battle Creek Lakeview summer leagues. With all the outdoor activities that shaped him, Bob’s legacy will be the caring heart he showed to his family, friends, and church. Since the mid-1970s, Bob and his wife Mary opened their homes and hearts to provide end-of-life care for Bob’s mother and father, Mary’s mother, two members of the church, and their son, Timothy. He also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and worked for his church, sharing his carpentry and cooking skills. Surviving is his wife; Mary (Szabo) Schreiner of Bedford Township; sons: Greg (Roxanne) Schreiner of Coldwater and Bob (Lisa) Schreiner of Galesburg; 7 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother; Jack L. Schreiner and his son; Timothy. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 10, 2022, at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home & Cremation Service, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Pastor Janet Wilson, officiating. Private inurnment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church or University of Michigan Hospital.
