Robert Charles “Bob” Dugan, age 87, of Battle Creek, Born on December 20, 1926, the son of Dr. William M. and Lucy (Bourgeois) Dugan passed away at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo under the caring and professional supervision of the E.R., I.C.U and Palliative Care staff, while surrounded by his loving family. This followed a courageous battle with multiple health challenges due to diabetes. He graduated from St. Philip Catholic Central High School in 1945. Following high school, Bob was drafted into the U.S. Army during WWII and was in basic training at the conclusion of the war. He was subsequently sent to Austria and Germany and served as an M.P. and guard of prisoners as part of the Allied occupation. Bob stated that when he would stand on the deck of the Merchant Marine ship that transported him to Europe, it was impossible to look at the vastness of the ocean and not think of God. Following his honorable discharge, Bob attended St. Thomas University in St. Paul, MN, and graduated in 1951. He was joined in marriage to the love of his life, Loretta Hallett in 1957 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Battle Creek. While he was employed at Wolverine Insurance, he completed a M.A. in history at Western Michigan University. Following a brief stint as a history teacher, he became a probation officer in first the juvenile and then circuit courts. He gained a well-deserved reputation in the court system for his diligence, effectiveness and compassion. Bob was a past member of the Legion of Mary, St. Joseph Dad’s Club, church choir and a Eucharistic minister. He was also a baseball coach for St. Joseph Little League baseball teams, and was a ready volunteer at the parish for numerous projects and activities. Bob had a wonderful and zany sense of humor. He was particularly fond of Marx Brothers movies and Warner Brothers Cartoons. He enjoyed Rudy Vallee’s singing, not because it was any good, but because it was so bad. His laugh was loud and infectious. Bob was a good and honorable husband, father and grandfather. His kindness, wit, intelligence, vocabulary, fondness for dogs and vanilla ice cream, and knowledge of music, history and sports will be greatly missed. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brother L. Edward Dugan and son-in-law Jim Macy. Bob is survived by his wife Loretta; daughter Lori Macy of Rockford, IL; son Tim (Karen) Dugan of Portland, MI; grandchildren: Brett, Meghan and Sean Macy, and Janelle, Joanna and Dani Dugan; brother Rev. Father William Dugan retired of San Diego, CA; sister Mary Margaret Galloup of Battle Creek, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Special thanks go out to Dr. Montie Gould and staff, especially Karen and Debbie; as well as Senior Home Support, especially Dessa, DeeDee and Patrick; neighbors Bill and Tammy Duff and Jerry and Cathy Horvat will forever be treasured for their love and friendship. Visitation will be held at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home on Monday, December 15, 2014 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
