Died on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, in Battle Creek. Richard was born on August 4, 1941, in Plainwell, MI, the son of Wylie and Alice (Latta) Young. Richard was a 1959 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force from January 4, 1961, to December 1, 1964. Richard was united in marriage to the former Peggy Cooper in 1990, who preceded him in death. He was employed at Hi-Lex Corporation as a warehouse supervisor for over 26 years, retiring in 2006. Richard was a past member of the American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Police, served on the Springfield City Council from 2012 to 2016, served as vice-mayor and was on the Planning Commission from 2000 to 2004. Surviving is a son, Richard (Michele) Young; 3 stepdaughters, Cathy Ooten, Shelly Hoffman and Susie Rummel; 16 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; a special friend, Sandy Robinette. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Darren M. Young in 2022, a step-son, Joe Ooten, a brother, Dale Young and a sister, Willo J. VanNortwick in 2022. A visitation will be held Monday from 4 to 7:00 p.m., at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home and Cremation Services. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
