Richard Lee Hammock, Age 79, Of Battle Creek, Died Monday, January 9, 2012, in Battle Creek. Richard was born on May 22, 1932, in Battle Creek, the son of Levi Amos and Eleanor (Wygent) Hammock.
He had been a lifelong resident of the area attending Battle Creek Schools. He was a veteran in the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War, recieving the Korean Service Ribbon, a Bronze Star, United Nations Service Medal, National Service Medal and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. Richard was employed for 36 years at Post from 1952 until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the Post 25 year Club, was an avid golfer, and enjoyed traveling, gambling, shooting guns and deer hunting. Surviving is a brother, Gerry Hammock of Battle Creek; sisters, Carol (Bo) Hammock-Goins of Battle Creek, Debra Hammock-Anderson; sister-in-laws, Tamara Hammock of Battle Creek and Irma Hammock of Florida; nieces and nephews, Ed (Amanda) Hammock of Battle Creek, Michael (Miram) Hammock of Battle Creek, Gary (Lorrie) Hammock, Scott Hammock, Tommy (Denise) Hammock both of Battle Creek, Lonnie and Jeff Hammock of Florida, Steven, Terry, Lindsey and Ronald(Kelly) Burdett, Sarah, Kenneth, Christopher and Richard Burdett, Dustin and Tony Hammock, David and Melissa Goins; longtime companion and special friend of 15 years, Gladys Smith of Battle Creek; cousins, The Gillespie family of Kalamazoo, Larry Hammock and Lavere Hammock- Bilbrey. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Donald and Ralph Hammock; a sister, Joan Hammock-Dishman; infant sister, Shirley Hammock; nephews, Todd Michael Hammock, Jimmy Burdett and Justin Hammock; nieces, Sasha Stuart and Cathy Hammock . Visitation will be held from 2 to 4:00 p.m. and 6 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m., Thursday, January 12, 2012, at the funeral home with The Rev. Eric Perry officiating. Interment with full military honors will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation, National Kidney Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
