Richard E. Harper, 85, of Battle Creek, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday September 18, 2011 at home after a lengthy illness. He was born on June 7, 1926 in Battle Creek to Elmer E. and Lillian M. (Rice) Harper. Richard graduated from Lakeview High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the USS Stern. Richard was united in marriage on July 13, 1960 in Battle Creek to Beatrice M. Bishop. He was employed by the Kellogg Company as a machinist for 25 years retiring in 1986. Richard is survived by his wife, Beatrice, a son, Brad (Esther) Harper, of Benson, AZ; daughters, Jan (David) Harper-Weir, of Kalamazoo, Judy Radcliff, and Diane (David) Bush, both of Battle Creek, thirteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Larry Radcliff. Richard was a member of the Kellogg 25 Year Club. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and going to the casino. Richard in his younger years participated in stock car and go cart racing. Family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm Tuesday September 20, 2011 at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home where services will be held 1:30 pm Wednesday. Interment will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery with Military Honors. Memorial contributions may be given to Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice or WWII Memorial Fund.
