Richard A. Berning, 80, of Battle Creek died Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at Heartland Health Care. He was born on November 15, 1931 in Luckey, Ohio to Norman H. and Amelia R. (Rothenbuhler) Berning.
Richard graduated from Woodward High School in Toledo, Ohio in 1949. He played trombone in the marching band. He then served with the Marines during the Korean War as an Aviation Electrician from 1952 to 1954. After the Service, Richard moved to Battle Creek and was employed by Glenn White Heating from 1954 until 1972 when he started his own Heating and Cooling business. Richard married Betty Ann Wing on March 26, 1955 in Toledo. They have lived in Battle Creek since then. Richard enjoyed taking care of his pool and yard, gardening, going to his kids and grandkids sports/activities and model building, especially planes.
Richard is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty, children Richard A. Berning Jr. (Annette), Gary S. Berning (Laurie), Thomas E. Berning (Ronda), and Tami L. Brown, eighteen grand children, and brothers Robert Berning and Darrell Berning. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Gwen Mennitt and Carol Carver.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Richard A. Henry Funeral Home with Pastor Kelly Hadlich officiating. Visitation will be held at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
