Richard Jay Bartow

Richard J. Bartow, age 79, of Athens, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2025. He was born on March 18, 1945, in Goshen, Indiana, the son of Homer and Mary (Brunk) Bartow.

Rich graduated from Goshen High School and later pursued his higher education at Purdue University, where he was proud to be a member of ROTC, earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After completing his studies, he relocated to the Athens area in 1969, beginning a fulfilling career at Clark Equipment Company. In 1984, he joined the engineering team at Stryker, where he dedicated himself until his retirement as the Director of Engineering in 2004. Rich's innovative spirit was reflected in his numerous patents acquired during his time at both Clark Equipment and Stryker.

A gifted craftsman, Rich devoted his efforts to remodeling the old farmhouse in Athens where he raised his family and subsequently restored a charming lake house on Goguac Lake. He cherished the moments spent boating and tubing on the lake with his grandchildren and family. Rich's passions extended to motocross racing in his youth, mountain biking at Fort Custer State Park, and long road biking trips. On sunny days, it was not uncommon to see him cycling 30 miles from home. His love for photography, snow skiing, and various exercises complemented his deep appreciation for family times, whether it be during daddy-daughter dances or Pinewood Derby races.

On January 9, 1976, he married the love of his life, Barbara (Cummins) who survives. Also surviving are three children: Joseph (Freida) Michilizzi of Athens, Jessica Schuemann of Battle Creek, and Christopher Bartow of Battle Creek; seven grandchildren: Tony Olcheske, Tyler Spoor, Cody Schuemann, Lexie Schuemann, Reilly Schuemann, Luke Schuemann, and Pine Schuemann; three great-grandchildren: Princeton Schuemann, Lincoln Olcheske, and Rexon Spoor; two brothers: Dave (Becky) Bartow and Steve (Cathy) Bartow; his sister Marcie (Andy) Ball; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate Rich’s life on Sunday, March 9, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home and Cremation Services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
