Ocine Verna Gray, Age 98, Of Battle Creek, Died Tuesday, February 24, 2015, at Arbor Hospice-The Residence in Ann Arbor. Ocine was born on April 21, 1916, in Hackleburg, AL, the daughter of John D. and Nora (Watkins) Brooks and was the youngest of 5 children. On February 22, 1935, she was united in marriage to Lester Gray who preceded her in death on September 24, 1986. She owned and operated Ocine’s Beauty Shop for over 30 years where she made many long life friends. Ocine was a member of the Lakeview Baptist Church for over 70 years where she participated in leadership responsibilities. She was also a member of the Battle Creek Health System Auxiliary making over 2800 baby caps thru the years. She enjoyed Tiger baseball games, word searches, reading and knitting. Surviving are children, Dan (Mary) Gray of Ann Arbor, Sharon Arnold of Ypsilanti; grandchildren, Ted (Sarah) Gray of Toledo, OH, Bob Gray of Helsinki, Finland, Shawn Arnold and Dana (Frankie) Pennington of Ypsilanti; great grandchildren, Paige, Shane, Ashley, Brooklyn and Chandler. She was preceded in death by brothers, Gilbert, Hoton and Royce; sister, Zella and a son-in-law, Jerry. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart until the very end. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, February 27, 2015, at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service.
