Nancy Mcdonald

March 23, 1937 — August 4, 2017

Nancy Ann McDonald, 80 of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at home on Friday August 4, 2017. She was born March 23, 1937 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Wesley and Esther Freeman. Nancy is survived by her husband of 53 years Byron J. (Mac) McDonald, her children, Michael J McDonald, Kelly Ann McDonald, Stephen P. McDonald, all of Battle Creek, her sister and brothers, Maxine Freeman, Bruce Freeman, Dale Freeman and Charlie Freeman all of Grand Rapids, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and twin sister Natalie Portser. She graduated from Grand Rapids Junior College and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Western Michigan University. Nancy was a very hard worker all her life. She picked apples with her twin growing up, played Mickey Mouse at Wurzburgs Department Store, worked for the Kalamazoo Deputy County Clerk and Consumers Power, taught 3 rd grade for 2 years at Madison Park in Grand Rapids and 3 rd grade for 2 years at Territorial School in Battle Creek and was a substitute teacher in the Battle Creek Public Schools for 30 years. Nancy loved spending time with family and friends. She spent summers while her children were growing up at the Riverside Swim Club. She attended many concerts at WMU and in town, of the Gold Company and Jazz concerts and Post Band concerts with her husband and son Mike. Nancy spent summers helping to sell crafts all around the area. She watched her son Steve play sports and coach. Nancy loved to travel with family. She would visit the beach at South Haven and Cocoa Beach, Florida with family and her sister Maxine for spring breaks and Long Beach Island, NJ for weeks in the summer at her In-Law’s house. She loved visiting Disney World. Her favorite ride was “It’s A Small World”. She loved family gatherings for the holiday’s, visiting their cottage and enjoyed spending every Wednesday with her parents in their later years. She loved her pets, her childhood dogs, and her dog PJ and cat Timmy. She loved reading books, visiting the library every Friday with her son Mike. She enjoyed taking care of her lawn and walks with her son Mike and daughter Kelly. In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place.
