Mary Y. (Szabo) Schreiner, age 86, of Bedford Township, passed peacefully on the morning of March 25, 2023. She was born on September 2, 1936, in El Paso, TX, the daughter of Michael J. and Mary (Gonzalez) Szabo. Mary grew up in a military family, spending time in El Paso, Fort Knox, KY, Fort Custer, MI before the family settled in Battle Creek where she graduated from Battle Creek Central High School. In 1956 she married Robert D. Schreiner of Lacey, MI, her husband of 65 years, and made a home in Lacey. They then moved to Battle Creek in 1967 and lived in the area for their remaining years. Mary was a self-taught accountant and computer operator and had lengthy work relationships with Consolidated Packaging Company and Barker Manufacturing of Battle Creek. After retirement, she spent her years traveling with her husband throughout the country including a cherished RV trip to Alaska. She loved attending the theater with her beloved close-knit group of friends who had season tickets to the Barn Theater in Augusta and traveled to larger cities to view Broadway touring companies as well as operas and ballets. Mary also joined her husband Bob in caring for her family, friends, and church as they opened their homes and hearts to provide end-of-life care for Bob’s mother and father, Mary’s mother, two members of the church, and their son, Timothy. Surviving are her sons: Greg (Roxanne) Schreiner of Coldwater and Bob (Lisa) Schreiner of Galesburg; 7 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; her sisters Josephine Merrill of Indian Land, South Carolina, and Eustolia (Paul) Luna of Battle Creek. Preceding her in death were her husband Robert D. Schreiner, her parents, her brothers Victor and Ralph Szabo and her son, Timothy A. Schreiner. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at the Christ United Methodist Church, 65 N Bedford Rd, Battle Creek, MI, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Pastor Janet Wilson, officiating. Private inurnment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Kairos Dwelling or Christ United Methodist Church.
