Mary L. Rice, 99, of Newton Township died Sunday July 10, 2011 at Minges Manor.
She was born on October 13, 1911, the daughter of Ira and Bessie (Mallow) Hagelshaw.
Mary was born and resided most of her life on the family centennial farm. She was a
1932 graduate of Argubright Business College and assisted her husband, Robert with the family farming business after their marriage. Mary was a long-time, avid supporter of the Calhoun County Fair and served as a charter member and secretary of the Calhoun County Agricultural and Industrial Society. She was also well known for knitting and crocheting many beautiful afghans for family and friends, as well as for her fondness for playing cards. In 1935, Mary was married to Robert L. Rice who preceded her in death in 1987. She was also preceded in death by her eldest son, Robert L. Rice Jr., in 2004; sisters, Myrtie Puff, Mildred Hurlburt, and a brother, Raymond Hagelshaw. Surviving are her daughter, Janet (Kent) Evans, of Battle Creek, a son ,Ronald (Bonnie) Rice, of Lakeland, Florida; daughter-in-law, Joanne Rice, of Ceresco, seven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. Family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm Friday July 15, 2011 at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home where services will be held 11am Saturday. Interment will follow at Newton Cemetery.
