Martin Kelly

Martin “Mort” Kelly, age 88, of Battle Creek, passed away Sunday, November 30, 2014 at Bronson Battle Creek. He was born July 23, 1926 in Battle Creek, Michigan the son of Martin G. and Bernice (Carpenter) Kelly and was raised in Augusta where he graduated from Augusta High School in 1945. Following graduation he worked as a dental technician for two years before joining Michigan Bell where he worked for 36 years, 22 of which were spent at the Federal Center. On February 27, 1948 he was married to the former Bernadine M. Watkins and they made their home in Battle Creek. Mort enjoyed Square Dancing, camping, woodworking, hunting and fishing, and was an avid cribbage player. He was a member of the Lakeview Baptist Church having served as Deacon, Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, usher and member of the XYZ Club. He also coached little league baseball and assisted with the Boy Scouts. Mr. Kelly is survived by his wife, Bernadine M. Kelly of Battle Creek; children: Mark (Laura) Kelly of Athens, Sue (Tom) Rose of Battle Creek, Gregg (Martha) Kelly of Battle Creek and Alan Dixon of Coldwater; sixteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Donnita Ball and two brothers: Jay and Robert Kelly. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Lakeview Baptist Church with Rev. Adam Metzger officiating. Interment will follow at Beckley Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Lakeview Baptist Church or Shriner Children’s Hospital.  www.henryfuneralhome.org
