Mark Saunders

Mark James Saunders of East Leroy passed away at home October 26, 2019 surrounded by his family. Mark was born on Feb 28, 1948, in Battle Creek to Robert (Jim) and Margaret (Walters) Saunders. Mark leaves behind his wife Carol and two children Christy (Jeff) Minier of Battle Creek and Andrew (LeAnn) Saunders also of Battle Creek. Also surviving are his four grandchildren Timothy and Gabby Minier, Aiden and Charlie Saunders, and a sister Gail (Rod) Newcomb of Battle Creek. He was preceded in death by his parents. After graduating from Lakeview High School Mark married his high school sweetheart Carol Stearns on April 27, 1968. Together they spent a lifetime working on their home and traveling. Mark and Carol’s favorite destination was St. Martin where they spent many winters. Mark enlisted in the Navy and served his country in Guam during the Vietnam War. Mark continued his Military career with the Navy reserves, retiring with the rate of Chief. Mark was the third-generation owner of Walters Plumbing Co. retiring due to health issues in 2018 after 56 years of employment. Mark was proud to share his plumbing and business knowledge with Andrew, Christy and Tim who all worked with him at the family business which turned 100 years old in 2019. Mark also enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in their activities.  Mark joined the Catholic faith in 2013 and was a member of St.  Joseph Catholic Church in Battle Creek. In his retirement years, Mark enjoyed taking his wife and dog Leo to get a cup of coffee. The family will receive friends at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home on Sunday, November 3, 2019 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with the Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 4, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with interment to follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
