Margaret Ann (Doubleday) Smith, age 87, died peacefully on November 3, 2014 surrounded by the love of her family. She was born September, 11, 1927 in East Leroy, Michigan the daughter of Duane and Emma Ahlene (Carpenter) Doubleday. She was preceded in death by her husband Al, her parents, brother John Doubleday and sister Shirley Mitchell. Immediately after graduation from high school, Margaret was employed by Jacobson’s department store in 1944 as their business manager. In 1947 she married Alfred G. Smith; at the time of his death in April of 2011 they had been married for 64 years. After marriage, Margaret devoted herself to family and community serving as Bluebird and Campfire leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, as well as teaching Sunday school at the Athens Methodist Church. In 1964, she returned to work, and was employed as secretary with the Athens Area Schools for 25 years until her retirement in 1989. In retirement, she enjoyed volunteering with the Athens Historical Society, the Athens Library Board, and the Battle Creek Health Systems, as well as spending time with her family. Throughout their life together, Margaret and Al shared a love of travel experiencing Europe, Scandinavia, Canada and the Caribbean, as well as many locations in the United States. Surviving are daughters: Christine Smith of Portage and Rebecca (David) Martin of Clinton, and son Richard (Linda) Smith of Land o’Lakes, Florida along with granddaughter Stephanie; brother Carl Doubleday of Kalamazoo, sister-in-law Virginia Doubleday of Athens; brother-in-law Leonard Mitchell of East Leroy; and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home with a Memorial Service to be held at the funeral home on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Following the service a reception will be held at the Holiday Inn, 12812 Harper Village Drive from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. A private interment will conducted at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
