Louis Atchley

Louis “Bernie” Atchley, age 84, of Battle Creek, passed away Friday, December 20, 2013 at Bronson Battle Creek. He was born June 1, 1929 in Battle Creek, Michigan the son of Roy Charles and Mary Theresa (Marriott) Atchley. A 1947 graduate of St. Philip High School, Bernie was drafted and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his time in the service, he went to work at the Kellogg Company and retired in 1988 after 41 years. He was a true outdoorsman; he loved to hunt and fish, take trips “up north” and was a member of the N.R.A., Kellogg 25 Year Club and the American Legion. Bernie was a devoted catholic and member of St. Philip Parish who visited the Vatican and had an audience with Pope Pius XII. He was also a history enthusiast and photography was his passion. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: John and Jim Atchley; two sisters: Ann Atchley and Mary Orlowski; nephew: Jim Orlowski and niece Sally Atchley. Bernie is survived by his fiancé and lifelong companion Julia A. Shirk; two nieces: Mary Vasquez and Patricia (Ed) Bell, and two nephews: Mike (Diane) Orlowski and Tom Atchley. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 30, 2013 at St. Philip Catholic Church with The Rev. Francis Marotti, celebrant. Interment will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Philip Catholic Church, Battle Creek Area Catholic Schools Foundation or Boys Town, P.O. Box 8000, Boys Town, NE, 68010. Bernie was a wonderful storyteller and poet. Once you met him you had a friend for life.
