Leona M. Spencer passed away Friday, February 2, 2018, at The Laurels of Bedford. She was born August 17, 1923 in Sturgis, MI, to Forrest C. and Alma (Silvernail) Reed. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, James R. Spencer; a brother, Forrest Reed and brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles (Sally) Reed, Warren (Kaye) Reed and sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette (Llewelyn) Sidnam. She is survived by her son, Robert (Gail) of Grand Rapids; a grandson, James (Christina) of Brighton and 3 great grandsons, Jackson, William and Everett along with many nieces and nephews. Leona was a 1941 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. She was employed by Comerica Bank for 30 years retiring in 1983 as an Assistant Vice President in charge of loans. Leona loved volunteering and was a Trustee of First Presbyterian Church where she was a member for over 50 years. She was active in Sew & Sews making quilts for abused and abandoned babies, Priscilla Circle, the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen and the First Presbyterian Church Retreat Center and was an honorary member of Presbyterian Women of Battle Creek. She loved spending time with family, sewing, knitting and gardening. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m., Thursday, February 8, 2018 at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home with The Rev. Patricia Weatherwax officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Presbyterian Church Retreat Center, Sew & Sews, The Salvation Army, The Humane Society of South Central MI or the First Presbyterian Benevolence Fund. www.henryfuneralhome.org
