Lena M. Madeira, age 93, of Battle Creek, passed away Tuesday July 21, 2015 at Evergreen Senior Care Center. She was born December 15, 1921 in Highland Park, Michigan the daughter of Silvio and Josephine (Sivori) Cioni. A graduate of Commerce High School she went on to attend the University of Michigan. On July 9, 1949 she was married to Robert J. Madeira in Detroit and they have been residents of Battle Creek since 1988. For the past 30 years they wintered in Palmetto, Florida. Mrs. Madeira enjoyed playing pinochle, reading and cooking Italian food for friends and family. She was proud of her Italian heritage and was a gold card member of the Venetian Club. Surviving are her husband, Robert of Battle Creek; three children: Susan (Rodney) Halonen of Battle Creek, Sylvia M. (Wallace) Zawierucha of Algonac and Robert John (Robyn) Madeira of Commerce; eight grandchildren: Amy McQuade, Adam Bye, Neil, Ryan, Todd and Jared Halonen, and Alexa and R. Mitchel Madeira; eight great-grandchildren: Anthony and Sofia Herdegen, Raya, Finn, Eleni, Madelyn, Koelle and Henry Halonen; she was a special aunt to Sheryl Ferguson, Gary and Lary Graves. Mrs. Madeira was preceded in death by her parents and sister Helen Graves. Private services were held at St. Joseph Catholic Church with interment at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
