Joan M. Hartley, Age 81, Of Battle Creek, Died Thursday, September 15, 2011, at Borgess Medical Center. Joan was born on December 19, 1929, in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of James R. and Florence Schaeffer. She was a graduate of Holy Family School in Dayton. Joan had been an area resident for 40 years coming from Ohio. On November 20, 1948, she was united in marriage to Robert D. Hartley who preceded her in death in 2002. Joan worked as a tailor at Cole’s Incorporated retiring after 20 years of service. She enjoyed gardening, reading, cooking, camping and spending time with her family. Surviving are children, Michael N. (Lyn) Hartley of Japan and Kathryn A. (Steve) Gridley of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Noel Hartley, Melissa (Darryl) Grimes and Jessica (Keith) Whaley; great grandchildren, Brennan and Karson Grimes, Addison Whaley and Adelina Hartley; brothers, Donald (Sharon) Schaeffer, Gary (Faye) Schaeffer and Richard Schaeffer all of Dayton, OH; “sister”, Peggy Hartley of New York. She was preceded in death by her father James R. Schaeffer and biological mother, Ruth (Boosinger) Schaeffer; a twin brother, James E. Schaeffer and a sister, Mary Sargeant. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 19, 2011, at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home with The Rev. Robert G. Muirhead officiating. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
