Jason Matthew Smit, age 50, of Fennville, MI., passed away unexpectedly at his home on May 9, 2020. He was born on November 24, 1969 in Battle Creek, third son of Robert Smit and wife, Bonnie. Jason graduated from Lakeview High School in 1988, then went on to receive degrees in electronics and telecommunications from Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor. Following he went on to a career in telecommunications with Nortel and Ciena, traveling throughout the United States as a Senior Field Technician. While in high school and college, Jason worked at a local service station where he developed his love for cars, trucks, motorcycles, and basic knowledge of auto mechanics. He became a self-taught mechanic who loved working on many “Ford” cars and trucks, and two Harley Davidson motorcycles. After retirement, he spent most of his time working on his vehicles at his home in Fennville. When not working on them, he loved driving any one of them all over the countryside. He especially loved riding his Harleys. He and his brother, Joe rode their Harleys to the big motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota many times. Jason was preceded in death by his father; Robert (Bob) Smit. He is survived by his mother; Bonnie Olson Fleming of Battle Creek, brothers; Timothy Smit of Battle Creek, Joe Smit of Illinois, nephews; Crick (Kristin) and Adam Smit of Illinois, nieces; Monica and Sarah Skopick. Cremation has taken place; a private family memorial will take place at a later time.
