Janet Shanks

Janet C. Shanks, age 82 of Battle Creek, passed away Friday, April 20, 2018 surrounded by her family. Jan was born on December 23, 1935, in Covington, Kentucky, the daughter of Fred and Loraine (Hagerty) Hampton. On September 7, 1963, she was united in marriage to Joseph C. Shanks who preceded her in death in 1983. She had been an area resident since 1971, retiring from Willard Library. She was a lifelong learner who loved to travel, read, and garden. She enjoyed spending time with her friends, eating out and seeing movies. Throughout her life, she remained active in the community, enjoying yoga and Zumba and volunteering her services for Willard Library. She cherished attending her grandchildren’s athletic events and supporting them in their endeavors over the years. Her family and dogs were the center of her life. Surviving are her children, Leslie (David) Bowers of East Leroy and Joseph (Lisa) Shanks of Battle Creek; grandchildren: David J. and Paul Bowers, Haley and Braden Shanks; and a great grandson, David L. Bowers. She also leaves behind many dear friends and her faithful dog, Chip. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Dennis and Thomas Hampton. Cremation has taken place and in accordance with her wishes, a private family graveside service will be held. Friends are welcome to attend a Celebration of Life open house on Saturday, April 28, 2018 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at The Stone Barn (994 Blossom Road, Sherwood, Michigan 49089, www.theoldstonebarn.com). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of South Central Michigan, Great Lakes Caring Hospice Foundation, or a charity of one’s choice.
