James "Jim" Davis

James “Jim” Richard Davis, age 89, of Battle Creek, passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family on April 7, 2018.  He was born in Battle Creek, Michigan and was a lifelong area resident.  He graduated from Lakeview High School in 1946 and married his sweetheart Doris in 1950.  Jim was an extremely hard worker.  He built his own house from the ground up, basement to chimney.  His drafting plans were precise, making this his home for the next sixty-seven years.  He served in the Merchant Marines for a short time.  Jim apprenticed at McQuern & Rolfe Heating and Air Conditioning, later becoming partner, then owner of a respected business.  Jim worked hard even during his rare leisure times.  He was known for golfing from “Snowflakes on the ground to snowflakes off the ground.”  He made the news one year for shooting over 3,000 holes of golf with his brother.  He loved to fish both summers and winters, with family picnics always including perch.  Deer hunting camps with his family were always happy times, and often meant more venison in the freezer.  Jim loved hiking and camping, especially going on the Appalachian Trail with his daughter, and summer camping with his family.  Jim’s family was his pride and joy.  He is survived by his wife; Doris, daughter; Valerie, sons; James(Jeanne) and Mark (Johanna) Davis, brother; Donald Davis, grandchildren; Wendy, Courtney, James, Marie, Christopher, M. Joel, Zachary, and great grandchildren; Alexis and Natalie.   He was preceded in death by his parents; James A. and Lavica Davis, sister; Lois Eisen and grandson; D. Matthew.  In accordance to his wishes, cremation has taken place.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home & Cremation Services with memorial services to immediate follow. Hospice Chaplain; Nancy Vander Roest officiating, with inurnment to take place at Memorial Park Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.henryfuneralhome.org
