James L. Spoor

James L. Spoor, age 81 of Athens, died Saturday, April 13, 2024. Jim was born August 15, 1942, in Battle Creek, Michigan, the son of Charles James and Elizabeth Bell (Melody) Spoor. A 1960 graduate of Athens High School, Jim went on to study at Michigan State University from 1960 to 1962 and graduated from Tri-State University in 1965 with a degree in engineering. Following graduation Jim went on to work in the Ternstedt Division at General Motors until 1970. On December 24, 1970, he married the former Joy Spencer, who preceded him in death on October 14, 2017. Jim later graduated from the Wayne State University School of Mortuary Science and with his wife, they owned and operated Spencer Funeral Home from 1991 until 2015. He also served as an E.M.T. for many years.  Jim was an avid reader, loved to play golf and enjoyed their “mini farm”.  He is survived by two sisters: Shirley (John) DiPietro of Battle Creek and Mary (Michael) Castine of Colorado Springs, Colorado as well as nine nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and sister Kay Riddle. A visitation will be held at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home and Cremation Services on Thursday, April 18, 2024, from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. with a graveside service to follow at Burr Oak Cemetery in Athens at 2:30 p.m. The family requests memorial contributions be directed to the Athens Community Library, 106 E.
