In 1955, Horst married Marianne, the love of his life, in their homeland. Together, they celebrated 70 remarkable years, marked by their deep love for each other and determination to build a better life for themselves and their family. They immigrated to Battle Creek in 1957, where Horst built a successful career as a highly skilled brick mason. His craftsmanship left an enduring mark on countless homes and buildings, a testament to his incredible pride in his trade. Despite the hardships of his early years, he developed an unwavering work ethic and outgoing personality, marked by his deep baritone voice and exuberant laugh.

Over the years, his family grew to include his beloved son, Gerald and daughter, Renita and grandchildren and great grandchildren who he adored. His family was central to his life, and he loved seeing and talking to them every chance he had. Horst also sponsored his brother Werner’s journey to the U.S., sharing with him the opportunity he found here. Over the years, their families spent many happy times together, celebrating holidays, playing card games, and sharing wonderful meals and much laughter.

Beyond his work and family, Horst found great joy in the outdoors and loved snow skiing and hunting. He and Marianne traveled frequently to St. Ignace to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. He was also passionate about sailing and was a member of the Battle Creek Yacht Club. And he never forgot his heritage and was actively involved in the Battle Creek German Club, making numerous friends there.
