Herbert A. Colwell

Died Monday, September 21, 2015, at Brookdale Assisted Living. Herbert was born on August 10, 1926, in Grand Rapids, MI, the son of Allen and Verona (Doddington) Colwell. He had been an area resident since 1943. He was a 1944 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII in the Philippines. On June 8, 1957, he was united in marriage to the former Polly A. Baldwin who preceded him in death in 2005. He then married the former Haroldine (Lyke) Shavers on April 14, 2007, she survives. Herbert was employed with General Motors as a machinist in machine repair for 25 years retiring in 1991. He also worked for United Steel and Wire for 20 years. He was a lifetime member of Lakeview Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, trustee and church moderator, he also attended the Living Word Church, was a member of the Springfield School Board for 4 years and a Boy Scout Troop Leader. He loved astronomy, hunting, woodworking, genealogy and flying, owning his own airplane. He also was a volunteer at Fort Custer National Cemetery for 20 years and the Kalamazoo Air Zoo in the restoration department for 20 years. Surviving are his children, Kathy (Jeffrey) Shepard of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Allen (Ande) Colwell of Knoxville, TN, and Gigi (Dan) Truex of Battle Creek; step-children, Gerald Keith (Chae kun) Chase, Jr., and Tamie L. (Don) Brown both of Battle Creek; 4 grandchildren, Bob (Becca) Colwell and Ben Colwell, Heather and Mitchell Truex; several step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren and 1 step- great great grandchild; a brother, Don (Sue) Colwell of Marshall; sisters-in law, Danine Colwell of Battle Creek and Norma Flanders of Leesburg, FL; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, William and Frank Colwell. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2 to 4:00 p.m. and 6 to 8:00 p.m., at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, September 24, 2015 at Lakeview Baptist Church. Interment with full military honors will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
