Harold Davis

January 26, 1918 — September 30, 2014

Harold A.  Davis, Age 96, Of Battle Creek, Our  dad, caring husband, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather and great great great grandfather has passed from our lives today September 30, 2014. He was born January 26, 1918, in Whiteriver Woodruss, Arkansas. He lived 96 years, 8 months and 4 days working to support his family. Giving freely of his time, money and prays to help family, friends and his church. He started out having to help his mother when his father passed due to tuberculosis. He was in the government CC program as a 16 year old working across the country making a silver dollar a day with room and board. He met and married Merldean Simmons at the age of 19 and she was 17. Married for 72 years before she preceded dad in death to be with the Lord on December 10, 2008. Dad was also preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Belle Davis, a brother, James, a sister, Mildred, daughters, Delpha Fay in 1949 and Shelba in 1979, granddaughters, Donna and Becky and a great- great grandson, Vinney. Dad worked in Arkansas as a share cropper picking cotton with mom in their early years. He moved the family to Michigan around 1951 for work in factories and a better life for his family. He worked for a short time in Lansing at the GM plant but ended up at Michigan Carton Paper Company to be at home more. He worked at Michigan Carton for 30 years before retiring and going back south to Alabama for a few years moving back again to be with his family. Dad loved to hunt, fish, gardening and most of all family, friends and church. He loved to retell the stories of his earlier years to everyone. Dad’s dad was full-blooded Cherokee Indian and he loved to tell of the outings with his dad at the tribal meetings when he was just a “little fellow” as he told it. Surviving are children, Sam (Karen) Davis, James C. (Jean) Davis, Deana J. Myrick and Donna A. (Dick) Kellogg; 21 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren, 53 great- great grandchildren, 6 great great- great grandchildren with 4 more on the way. Do not want to forget the many friends at his church who loved dad and thought of him as their adopted grandpa. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4:00 p.m. and 6 to 8:00 p.m. at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at the funeral home with Pastor Matt Hayman of Dexter Lake Church of God officiating. Interment will be at Hicks Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence. Dad, we love and miss you dearly and will miss you every second of every day. We will see you again when God calls each of us home to be with you and mom. Until then we will keep you and your stories along with the way you have helped and touched our hearts and lives, Love you Dad, James. www.henryfuneralhome.org
