In Loving Memory of Fred Joseph Janofski Jr.

(May 14, 1947 – January 3, 2025)

With heavy hearts, we honor the life of Fred Joseph Janofski Jr., who passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025, at the age of 77, surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. Born on May 14, 1947, in Daggett, Michigan, Fred was the beloved eldest son of Fred Sr. and Arlene (DeGrave) Janofski. A man of faith, family, and boundless generosity, Fred leaves behind a legacy that will forever inspire those who knew and loved him.

Fred grew up as the eldest of eight siblings, setting an example of kindness and responsibility. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Sr. and Arlene, and his dear sisters, Diane and Nancy. Surviving him are his cherished siblings: Roger Janofski of Wilson, Michigan; Donna (Len) Skrobiak of Bark River, Michigan; Karen (Mike) Bagladi of Hudsonville, Michigan; John (Kelly) Janofski of Carney, Michigan, and Christine (Jeff) Stage of Nadeau, Michigan.

Fred’s greatest joy was his family. On August 15, 1970, he married his soulmate, Annette (Theoret) Janofski, in Escanaba, Michigan. Together, they built a loving partnership spanning 54 years. He was a devoted father to Julie (Brett) Cutshall of Battle Creek, Michigan, and Jeffrey (Shelly) Janofski of Marshall, Michigan. As a proud grandfather, Fred cherished his seven grandchildren: Emily Cutshall, Jacob Janofski, Lydia (John) Downey, Joseph Janofski, Andrew Cutshall, Jayson Janofski, and Sarah Janofski.

Fred’s passion for learning and hard work shaped his life. A graduate of Carney-Nadeau High School (1965), he earned an associate degree from Bay de Noc Community College (1970) and a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts from Western Michigan University (1972). A proud veteran, Fred honorably served in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Vietnam War.

His professional journey was as diverse as his talents. Fred worked as a home builder, contractor, computer programmer, and educator. He shared his knowledge as a teacher of industrial arts at Portage and Marcellus schools and as a building trades instructor for KRESA. He also served as an adjunct professor at KVCC, Western Michigan University, and the Regional Manufacturing Technology Center. Later, Fred worked with Michigan Works and as a trainer for Kellogg Corporation before retiring. He was also a visionary, helping launch the Great Lakes Free Net.

Fred and Annette’s hearts were always open. They were foster parents for fourteen years, providing love and guidance to children in need and earning the honor of Foster Parents of the Year in 1979.

A man of deep faith, Fred was an active member of St. Martin of Tours and St. Joseph Catholic Churches. He served as a catechist, youth minister, and 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus. Leading young people to Catholic Heart Work Camp for five years brought him immense joy, as did his devotion to the Rosary. Fred’s loving reminder to his family, “Did you say your prayers?” will forever echo in their hearts.

Fred’s creativity and generosity shone through his hobbies. Whether woodworking, welding, camping, or working alongside his son in the pole barn, Fred approached life with enthusiasm. A farmer at heart, he automated his chicken coop and gave away countless eggs to family and friends, a testament to his selflessness. He also cherished his regular Tuesday and Friday date nights with Annette, a tradition of love and togetherness.

Fred’s kind heart, inventive mind, and unwavering faith will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
