Evelyn Y. Serbantez, age 79, of Battle Creek, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2014. She was born May 4, 1935 in Little Rock, Arkansas the daughter of John Oliver and Ida Lee (Noland) Diehl. Evelyn moved with her family to Battle Creek in 1952 and was a 1954 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. As a young girl in Arkansas she sang on a local radio program. She was a member of Life in Christ Ministries and rarely missed a church activity. An avid University of Arkansas fan, she also liked Michigan State University, the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions, and enjoyed working on puzzles. She worked at Federal Home Life Insurance Company for 31 years as a claims adjuster and later at the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store for 15 years. Evelyn is survived by her daughter: Pamela (Gary) Mehl of Battle Creek; granddaughter: Corrie A. Mehl of Mackinac Island, MI; and grandson: Aaron (Heather) Mehl and their children Reagan and Jordan of Richmond, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, John Diehl. Evelyn’s greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She traveled to visit many zoos with them and never missed a school activity. The family will receive friends at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Dan Martineau officiating.
