Elizabeth K. (“Buff”) Romick, 69, died at her home in Sherwood Saturday, August 13. She was born in Battle Creek September 11, 1941, to William C. Romick and Opal E. Davis. A 1959 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School, she worked mainly in the Pediatric area at Leila Hospital (now Bronson Battle Creek) for the next 37 years, where in 1996 she was awarded the prestigious Battle Creek Health System’s Physician’s Excellence Award.
Buff (as she preferred to be called) was very active on the Battle Creek bowling scene. She began league bowling at age 19 at Sharkey’s Bowling Alley on a team with her mother. Bowling was part of her life in several capacities. She served as league secretary many times, and had been city association manager for the past 35 plus years. Even though Buff had to give up the physical part of bowling, she also served in state offices--as a director for many, many years and was third vice president of the Michigan State USBC Women’s Bowling Association until her death. In 2010, this Association inducted her for meritorious service into their Hall of Fame (“For Devoting Unselfishly of Her Time and Efforts for the Game of Bowling”). Buff and her dad (“Red” Romick) were the first father-daughter combination inducted into the Battle Creek Bowling Hall of Fame.
Buff is survived by her close friend Wilma (Willie) Hughes and their dog, Riley; brother Bill (Doris) Romick of Algood, TN; sisters Marjorie (Bill) Aldrich of Long Beach, CA; and Pat (Norman) Fisher of Green Valley, AZ; seven nieces and nephews; and eight great-nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance will be held at Richard A. Henry Funeral Home on Thursday, August 18, at 11 a.m. with The Rev. Paul O. Brisbane officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 17, 4-8 p.m. and on the day of the service from 10-11 a.m. Because of her love of children, Buff asked that in lieu of flowers memorials be given to Shriners’ Children’s Hospital or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
