Edward Gamble

Edward Gamble of Battle Creek passed away on January 19th, 2014 at the age of 91 in the Bronson Battle Creek Hospital after a brief illness.
Visitation for friends and family will be from 4pm to 7pm, Thursday, January 23rd at Richard A Henry Funeral Home, 703 Capital Ave. SW, Battle Creek, Michigan and visitation at Wakeshma Community Church at 2pm on Friday, January 24, 2014.
Funeral services will be held 3pm, Friday, January 24, 2014 at Wakeshma Community Church, 16732 E. UV Ave, Fulton, MI 49052, with Pastor David Mackaluso officiating. Refreshments will be served in the church fellowship hall immediately after the service.
Edward Gamble was born in the port town of Stranraer, Scotland to Edward and Isabella Gamble on April 29, 1922. He immigrated to this country at the age of two with his parents and three siblings. His father was a Salvation Army Bandmaster in Scotland and became a United Brethren minister in the USA. The church always played a central role his son’s life here in this country.
Edward Gamble graduated from Athens High School in Southern Michigan in the class of 1939. He played short stop on the baseball team and loved baseball (i.e. the Tigers) always. He was an avid golfer and loved hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren.
He married Alta Lepper from Climax, MI in 1940 who has since preceded him in death. He later married Lois Jones from Grand Rapids, MI in 1970 who has also preceded him in death. He subsequently married Ruth Roe from Fulton, MI in 1999 who now survives him in life. He was preceded in death by all of his siblings; brother, John Gamble, and sister’s Jean Bouman and Daisy Athrean (all from Grand Rapids, Michigan).
He served in the 95th Infantry Division of the United States Army from 1944-1946 during WWII as part of the 377th Infantry Regiment (i.e. for which the book entitled “The Bravest of the Brave” was written). He landed on Omaha Beach, fought extensively on the front lines, was awarded the Purple Heart, and two Bronze Stars.
He lived in or around Battle Creek all of his life, working for Union Pump and Eaton Manufacturing Company until his retirement. He was highly committed to Wakeshma Community Church and served faithfully on most of its various boards, building committees, and departments for years.
Edward Gamble is currently survived by his children; Gary Gamble and his wife Katherine (Superior, MT), Joan Howes and her husband Tom (Mt. Clemens, MI), Yvonne Obreiter and her husband Roy (Hastings, MI), Dennis Jones and his wife Ruth (Trussville, AL), Terry Jones and his wife Rita (Rochester Hills, MI), Norman Jones (deceased), and DeAnn Auton and her husband Rod (Battle Creek, MI), 23 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to Wakeshma Community Church.
