Edward Joseph Behrndt, 79, of Battle Creek, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2011 at his home. He was born June 10, 1932 in Battle Creek, Michigan the son of Edward C. and Gertrude (Toeller) Behrndt. Following graduation in 1950 from Lakeview High School, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Macon from 1951 to 1955. He retired from the Battle Creek Police Department in 1988 as a Sergeant and had been with the department for 33 years. Ed’s greatest joy however, was his farm in Nashville which he worked at since 1964, even during his time as a police officer. He was a member of the American Legion and Elks Lodge. Ed was preceded in death by his parents and wife: Geraldine (Kowalski) in 1975. He later married Beverly J. (Bogosoff) in August 10, 1979 who survives. Also surviving are six children: Deborah (Dale) Ferrall, Edward J. Behrndt, Jr., Michael (Kay) LaPierre, Mary Ann (Joseph) Candela, Gregory (Angela) LaPierre and Jeanne-Marie (Scott) Bell; twelve grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers: James (Armina) Behrndt and Ronald Behrndt; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. where the Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Friday at St. Philip Catholic Church with The Rev. John D. Fleckenstein officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Barry County Hospice or St. Philip Catholic Church.
