Earl R. Douglas, 65, of Battle Creek went home to be with his Lord and Savior on August 19, 2013. He was born on October 31, 1947 in Cookeville, TN to James E. and Ella M. (Bolton) Douglas. He is survived by his love, his wife of 30 years, Sherri. He is also survived by his daughter, Kate (Tim) Gray, of Grand Rapids as well as grandsons Jakob, Jared, and Aiden.
He was a long time member of First Wesleyan Church where he served on many committees including the Local Board of Administration, Trustees, and Finance Committees. He served in numerous other leadership roles such as Children’s Discipleship and Hospital Visitation.
Earl had two careers. First as a career Department of Defense Civilian during which he worked in Texas, Arizona, Germany, and for the last 22 years of his career at the Federal Center in Battle Creek from which he took an early retirement.
He immediately went to work at Kellogg Community College as an instructor in 2001 and taught there until his illness required him to retire in 2013. He loved the students and seeing the lights come on as they understood a math concept that was being taught. The students also loved him for his ability to put concepts in simple terms they could understand. More than one student was heard to tell another student “If you have to take algebra, get Mr. Douglas”.
Earl also loved spectator sports, especially the Tennessee Vols football as well as the Detroit Lions and Tigers. He also enjoyed going for walks, reading, and playing mind expanding games on the computer such as KenKen and Sudoku. He was also a long time member of Toastmasters International and was a charter member of both the Cereal City Toastmasters and Transformed Toastmasters.
Visitation will be held from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm Sunday at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. Services will be held 10:30am Monday August 26, 2013 at the First Wesleyan Church with Rev. Dr. Robert Zuhl officiating. Interment will follow at East Hickory Corners Cemetery, Hickory Corners, MI. Memorial contributions may be given to American Cancer Society or First Wesleyan Church
