Passed peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus at 6:17 a.m. on Friday, October 16, 2020 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Doris was born in Battle Creek on March 17, 1932, the daughter of Julius R. and Florence Carlson. As a young girl she loved to play outside and explore on her grandparent's farm in Bellevue. She attended Battle Creek Central High School with membership in the Rainbow Girls Society and graduated in 1949. Doris was united in marriage to James Richard "Jim" Davis in 1950. She did various jobs including working in Goddes bakery, switchboard operator for Michigan Bell telephone and secretary for McQuern and Rolfe heating. She was proud to be a homemaker for her husband and three children and was known to make the best scratch pies of all. After her children grew up she pursued a new dream and entered the medical world. She started as a Gray Lady at Lakeview General Hospital, quickly advancing to Nurse Aide, Practical Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse (highest test score in Michigan at her exam sitting) and finally her Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Nazareth College at 50 years old with which she completed her career working in critical care at Battle Creek Community hospital (now Bronson Battle Creek hospital). She was a voracious reader and loved to do needlework. She especially loved her church and did alot of volunteer work there, particularly delighted in holding babies in the nursery.
Surviving are her children Valerie L .Rineveld of Portage, James Edward (Jeanne) Davis of Gaylord and Mark J.(Johanna) Davis of Otsego; grandchildren Wendy Rineveld, Marie Rineveld, Courtney Barnes, Joel Davis, James Robert Davis, Christopher Davis and Zach Roberts; great grandchildren Alexis Kisinger and Natalie Kisinger; brother Robert E. Carlson and sister Patricia A. Mullenix; half sisters Sharon (Carlson) Miyashiro and Dianne (Carlson) Pana of Hawaii. Doris was preceeded in death by her husband Jim in 2018, her grandson D. Matthew in 2010, half sister Joyce in 2018 and half sister Nancy in 2012
Visitation will be held Friday October 23, 2020 from 11:30a.m.to 1:30 p.m.at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow visitation at 2:00p.m. officiated by Pastor Robert Zuhl. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southwest Michigan.
