Donald G. DeGroot

After 95 wonderful years on earth, Don DeGroot went to be with his Heavenly Father on June 29, 2023.  Don was born on January 26, 1928, in Ocheyedan, Iowa to George and Neva DeGroot.  As a boy he was instilled with a strong work ethic and unwavering faith as he worked on the farm and attended Northwest Christian School.  Don dedicated three years of his life (1951-1953) defending his country in the Army during the Korean War.  Don graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Accounting from Calvin College and later received his MBA from the University of Michigan. In 1957, he married the love of his life (Deane Reynolds), whom he met at Calvin College.  He received his CPA and worked at Arthur Anderson in Chicago for three years before moving back to Battle Creek where he settled and raised his family, all while continuing his career as a CPA. Don’s church community and volunteerism was a central part of his life, and he actively participated and dedicated his time to the following organizations: President of the National Association of Accounting, Board Member of the Battle Creek Christian School, and held various leadership positions at Battle Creek Christian Reformed Church.  Don leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to his children and grandchildren who were his pride and joy.  He was proceeded in death by his parents George and Neva DeGroot and wife Deane Elizabeth of 59 years.  Don will be cherished in the hearts of his three daughters, Mary (Russ) Lanenga, Victoria (Gary) Ludema and Patricia DeGroot; seven grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; sister Esther and half-brother George.  The family will receive friends on Friday, August 18, 2023 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home & Cremation Services, with a memorial service to follow at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.  Inurnment will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery.  The family kindly requests donations be made to either the Van Andel Institute or ProMedica Hospice Southwest Michigan in honor of Don’s lifelong dedication to volunteerism and service.
