Charles E. VanHaaften, age 84, of Battle Creek, passed away on November 10, 2017 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born on April 1, 1933 in Kalamazoo, the son of William and Hermina (Nuyen) VanHaaften. Charles was united in marriage on June 21, 1953 to Nona Jean Hill. He was a lifelong area resident and worked as a truck driver for Weaver and Company, Kuiper’s and Fame Trucking. Charles was a member of REACT, Fraternal Order of Eagles and enjoyed going to auctions. He served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1953. Charles was preceded in death by his wife; Nona Jean VanHaaften in 2006 and a son; Charles E. VanHaaften Jr. in 2003. Surviving are a daughter; Deborah (Timothy) Smith of Denver, Colorado, son; Roger VanHaaften of Battle Creek, sisters; Lena, Anna, Judy, three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Memorial Services will be held 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 17, 2017 at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. James Gysel officiating, inurnment to follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
