Burley Plunkett

May 16, 1922 — March 28, 2020

Burley E. Plunkett, age 97 of Battle Creek, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2020 at the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility. He was born May 16, 1922 in Decatur, Alabama the son of Howard and Ollie (Fields) Plunkett. Drafted into the U.S. Army during WWII, he served in the 5 th Army 216 th Anti-Aircraft Artillery in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany and was involved in campaigns at Naples-Foggia, Sicily, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded many citations for his service including the Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with six Bronze Stars. Following his honorable discharge, he worked at Post Cereals for many years and at the time of his retirement was working in the research department. Burley was a volunteer firefighter for Emmett Township from 1947 to 1950 and was a Charter Member of the Emmett Rescue Squad. He had also served as President of the Cereal City Lions Club and was a member of the V.F.W. He was married to the former Ava Justice in 1948 and she preceded him in death in 1991. Burley is survived by his son: Rev. Douglas (Karon) Plunkett of Pittsford, MI; grandson: Jason Plunkett of Kalamazoo, MI and granddaughter: Christin Plunkett of Chicago, IL. Burley was always helping people in need. He never met a stranger, had many friends, was a hard worker and provided the best for his family. He loved fishing and goose hunting with his son and friends. A Graveside service with military honors will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery on Monday July, 20, 2020 at 3:00 p.m..
