Billy Walter Proffitt, age 84, of Battle Creek, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at the VA Medical Center. Billy was born on December 10, 1928, in Corbin, Kentucky, the son of Walter and Ida (Sexton) Proffitt. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific during WWII with the Marine Corp. He had been a resident of the area since 1956 and was employed as an engineer with Grand Trunk Railroad from 1946 until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, the Masonic Lodge holding the rank of 32nd degree and the Shriner’s. He loved playing golf, watching all sports, was a big Kentucky Wildcat basketball fan and in the 60’s transported college teams by train to sporting events. In February of 1948, he was united in marriage to the former Colleen Fuson who survives. Also surviving are two sons: Billy (Marilyn) Proffitt, Jr. and Dennis Proffitt both of Battle Creek; and granddaughter, Shannon Proffitt. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Visitation will be held Monday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at Faith Baptist Church with The Rev. Jim Augustine officiating. Interment with full military honors will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
