Betty L. Shelton, age 100, of Battle Creek passed away peacefully on October 28, 2024 at Lakeview Assisted Living. She was born on April 16, 1924 in South Bend, Indiana, the daughter of Loyd and Blanche (Blackburn) Bruce. Betty graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1942, and then went on to attend Mullenix Business School and Kellogg Community College. She was formerly employed at Eaton Manufacturing Company from 1942 to 1946, Associates Discount Corporation from 1946 to 1950, and the Kellogg Company from 1966 until her retirement in 1986 after 20 years of service. Betty was a member at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, Riverside Country Club, Goguac Yacht Club, former Vice President local Jr. Chamber of Commerce Association, and was a Red Cross volunteer at both Leila and Community Hospital in Battle Creek. She was also affiliated with the Kellogg Retiree’s Association, Valentine Center and the VA Women’s Golf League. Betty enjoyed golfing, oil painting, crocheting, jigsaw puzzles and reading in her free time. Betty was united in marriage on July 30, 1977 in Battle Creek to Walter D. Shelton, he preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her son, John Archer in 2018, sister, Lona Bruce Powlen, brothers, Lee Bruce and Lloyd Bruce Jr.. Betty is survived by her daughters; Carol (Lonnie) Underwood, Jane Mallernee, Linda (James) Baker, stepdaughter, Sherry Heagney, stepsons; Gary (Shelia) Shelton, David (Kathy) Shelton, Ronald (Courtney) Shelton, 19 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren. A private graveside service was held on Monday, November 4, 2024 at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Betty’s memory to the Humane Society of South-Central Michigan. Betty will forever be remembered for her beauty, her kindness to others, and her love for family. She was an intelligent woman that succeeded at everything she set her mind to accomplish.
