Bessie Owens

Bessie Jane Owens, Age 100, Of Battle Creek, Passed away December 4, 2013, at Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence. Bessie was born on August 2, 1913, in Marietta, Ohio, the daughter of Louis and Ollie Riemenschneider. She graduated from Marietta High School and Marietta Commercial College. She married Raymond J. Owens on April 20, 1935 in Woodsfield, Ohio. He preceded her in death on July 16, 1993. In 1952, the family moved to Battle Creek. Bessie was employed by Wolverine Insurance Company, M.E.S.C. and State of Michigan, Department of Mental Health at Fort Custer State Home in the Domestic Service Department for 11 years. After retirement, she and her husband spent 16 winters in Fort Pierce, Florida. Bessie was a member of the 20th Street Church of Christ and Ladies Bible Class. She enjoyed crocheting, crossword and jigsaw puzzles and spending time with her family and friends.  Bessie is survived by a son, Mark (Wanda) Owens; 6 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren and another due in December. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Harry and Crawford Riemenschneider. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 5:00 p.m., at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, December 9, 2013, at the funeral home. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
