Bertha Reyna Avila of Marshall formerly of Battle Creek, went home to be with our Lord on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 while at home in the loving care of her husband Oscar of 51 years and her children: Andrew Avila (Judith), Kathleen Boyer (Rick), Patricia Daws (Donald), Yolanda Glidden (Bruce), John Avila, Vivian Avila and Christine Olguin (Steve). Bertha was a beloved grandmother to Aaron (Kecia), Andrea, Daniel, Amy, Liz, Heather (Richard), Meghan, Stacey, Jordan, Zachary and Jada; and great-grandmother to Ciara, JoLee, Eden and David. She was born in Texas in 1935 to Anita Roman who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brother and two sisters. Bertha was a member of the St. Philip Rosary Group with 26 years of prayer meetings, served the Hispanic Community with her husband starting a Secret Santa program, served as a mentor to young women, and volunteered for the Diocese of Kalamazoo’s annual festival. She was recognized for her dedication to her husband during his 32 years of Air Force Service. Bertha loved gardening and received a “Beautiful Yard of Battle Creek” award in 2010. She loved cooking, fishing, bingo, and especially loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Friday, Oct. 14th at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home, 703 Capital Avenue, S.W., Battle Creek, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. A private interment will follow at Oakridge Cemetery in Marshall. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to St. Mary’s Church in Marshall or Lifespan Hospice.
