Aubrey Corum

Aubrey C. “Al” Corum, age 86, died Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Evergreen Senior Care and Rehab Center. He was born January 24, 1929 in Leaksville, North Carolina the son of Robert and Georgia (Vernon) Corum. He was stationed at Percy Jones Hospital while serving as an M.P. in the U.S. Army. It was there that he met Mavis Jarvis and they married on May 18, 1948 raising three children in Battle Creek. Aubrey was a union painter most of his life with a great reputation for his work ethics. He started at Independent Painting in early 1950’s, then Associated Painting from 1970 to 1985 and finally Associated Construction before his retirement in 1994. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and family and house boating trips to Dale Hollow, Tennessee. Al later became the official “cook” for hunting trips with his friends. The family remembers his baked chicken dinners and pancake breakfasts as well as Sundays when he would “hold down the couch” while watching NASCAR races, and all his jokes that were so bad they were good. The house was always filled with laughter. He was especially proud of his Native American heritage. Aubrey was preceded in death by his wife, Mavis; daughter, Leslie Rardin; brother, Oscar Corum and special nephew, Marine David Nelson. He is survived by his brother: Alvis Corum; son: Steven J. Corum of Scotts; daughter: Rebecca Knapp of Battle Creek; son-in-law: William Rardin of Athens; three grandchildren: Kacie (JR) Brunner of Athens, Brooke (Jeff) Bronsink of East Leroy and Steven Roddy of Chattanooga, TN; four great-grandchildren: Aubrey Ann Brunner, Maria, Jay and Graham Bronsink; and special nieces: Deanna (Gary) Hakes and Dawn (Jon) Hamelink. Funeral services will be held 12:00 p.m. Thursday at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Aubrey will be remembered as a kind and generous man. It gave him great joy to host annual family trips to Mackinac Island; it was there that he created memories that family will cherish forever. During the 1997 annual trip, Al placed second in the Lilac Festival 10k Walk; this achievement sent him into “training” for the following year. He was an avid walker, his uniqueness and joy of walking created one of his favorite pastimes; looking for money, but never spending his discoveries.
